Most international schools in Thailand operate as day schools, but a meaningful number offer boarding, either full-time or as a weekly option. For families in specific situations, it’s worth genuinely considering, not just defaulting to day school because it’s more common.

When boarding actually makes sense

A parent relocating alone first. If one parent is starting a new role in Thailand while the rest of the family finishes out a school year or sells a home elsewhere, boarding lets an older child start at the new school without the whole family relocating at once.

Frequent parental travel. Some expat roles involve regular travel that makes a consistent day-school routine difficult. Weekly boarding, where a child boards during the week and returns home on weekends, can provide more stability than a day-school routine disrupted by a parent’s travel schedule.

A child who’s ready for more independence. Some older students, particularly at secondary level, do genuinely well with the structure and peer environment boarding provides, independent of family circumstances.

What to check if you’re considering it

Full boarding versus weekly boarding. These are different experiences with different implications for family time. Confirm exactly what a school offers before assuming “boarding” means one specific thing.

Weekend and holiday arrangements. Ask what happens during school holidays and long weekends if the family isn’t in Thailand to collect a boarding child, this matters more for international families than it might for local ones.

Pastoral care and supervision ratios. Boarding puts more responsibility on the school outside academic hours. Ask specifically about supervision ratios in the boarding house, not just the classroom.

Cost difference from day fees. Boarding fees run substantially higher than day fees at the same school. Get the full boarding fee, not just the incremental difference from day fees, since some schools structure it as a separate all-in charge.

Making the decision

Boarding isn’t a fallback option or a lesser choice, it genuinely suits some family situations better than day school does. The decision should follow from your actual circumstances, not from an assumption that day school is the “normal” default and boarding is only for exceptional cases.
