Ask any school in Bangkok what it costs and you’ll get a tuition figure. That number is not what you’ll pay.

Most international schools quote tuition per year or per term, then add an application fee, a refundable deposit, a registration fee, uniforms, a bus service if you need one, and sometimes a technology fee for laptops or tablets. None of these show up on the tuition page. Some only appear after you’ve submitted an enquiry form.

What a first-year budget actually includes

A realistic first-year cost has three parts:

• Tuition. The recurring number, usually quoted per year but sometimes per term, so check which one you’re looking at before you compare two schools.
• One-off costs. Application fee, deposit, and registration fee land in year one only. Add them together and they can run into six figures in Thai baht before your child sits in a classroom.
• Ongoing extras. Uniforms, bus service and technology fees repeat every year and rarely appear in the headline tuition figure.

A school quoting lower tuition than a competitor can still cost more in year one if its one-off fees are higher. You won’t know until you ask, or until you compare listings that show both numbers side by side.

Why comparing schools by tuition alone doesn’t work

If you’re shortlisting three or four schools, tuition-only comparison hides the real gap between them. A school with modest tuition and a large deposit can cost more upfront than one with higher tuition and no deposit. Employer education allowances usually cap at a fixed amount per year, so the one-off costs in year one matter even more, since they land on top of whatever the cap already covers.

Get these in writing before you enrol. Verbal estimates change once you’re committed.
