Moving to Bangkok with Kids: How to Choose a School Before You Arrive

Most parents choosing a Bangkok school do it from another country, comparing schools they can’t walk through, in neighborhoods they’ve never seen. That’s harder than choosing a school locally, but it’s manageable if you work through it in the right order.

Start with curriculum, not location

Location feels like the natural first filter, but curriculum should come first. If your child needs to transfer curricula, that’s a bigger disruption than a longer commute. Confirm which curriculum your child is currently following, then filter Bangkok schools to that curriculum before you look at anything else.

Then work out where you’ll actually live

Bangkok traffic makes distance deceptive. A school 8km away can be a 20-minute drive or an hour, depending on the route and time of day. Common expat neighborhoods, Sukhumvit, Sathorn, Bang Na, Ari, each sit closer to different clusters of schools. Before you commit to a school, check its actual drive time from the neighborhoods you’re considering, not the straight-line distance.

If you haven’t chosen a home yet, it’s worth choosing the school first and finding housing near it, rather than the other way round. A great school with an hour-long twice-daily commute wears a family down fast.

What you can judge remotely, and what you can’t

You can compare curriculum, fees, age range and location from anywhere. What you can’t judge without visiting: how the campus actually feels, class sizes in practice versus on paper, and how current students and staff seem day to day.

If a visit before enrolling isn’t possible, ask the school for a video call with a homeroom teacher, not just admissions staff. Admissions is selling you the school. A teacher will give you a more grounded picture.

Build a shortlist, then compare properly

Browse international schools in Bangkok filtered by curriculum and fees to build a shortlist of three or four. Get full fee breakdowns from each, including one-off costs, before you compare them side by side. A school that looks affordable on tuition alone can turn out to be the most expensive once deposits and fees are added.

Contact your shortlist directly once you’ve narrowed it down. Application timelines vary, and popular schools fill enrolment slots months ahead of the school year.
