University Pathways from Thailand's International Schools: Where Do Graduates Go

Published 16 August 2026

Every international school’s marketing mentions university placement. Almost none of it tells you anything specific. If your child’s long-term academic path matters to your school choice, and for most parents it does, you need to ask sharper questions than a prospectus answers.

Why “strong university placement” means nothing on its own

A school claiming strong placement without naming destinations could mean anything from a handful of students at highly selective universities to a broad spread across average ones. The phrase alone tells you nothing. What actually matters is the specific list, and how it’s changed over the last few graduating years, not just the most recent one.

What to ask instead

Ask for the actual university destination list from the last two or three cohorts, not a highlight reel of the best outcomes. A full list tells you the real range of where students end up, not just the top of it.

Ask how many students applied to competitive programs versus how many were accepted. A school that sends every student to apply to the same handful of highly selective universities, with a low acceptance rate, is different from one that guides students toward a realistic spread matched to their actual profile.

Ask about counseling resources specifically. How many dedicated university counselors does the school have, and at what student-to-counselor ratio? This is one of the clearest predictors of how much individual guidance your child will actually get, and it varies enormously between schools of similar size.

How curriculum affects this

A school’s curriculum shapes which universities read its results most naturally. British curriculum results map directly onto UK and Commonwealth admissions. IB Diploma results are read by a wide range of universities globally, with particular strength where independent research ability matters to admissions. American curriculum, especially with AP courses, builds directly toward US college applications. None of this replaces asking for the actual destination list, but it explains why two equally strong schools can produce different-looking outcomes.

Compare IB, British and American curriculum schools in Thailand by location and fees, then take your shortlist directly to each school’s admissions team with these specific questions. The answers you get, or don’t get, tell you more than any prospectus will.
